The silence at this spot is almost eerie, wouldn’t you say? Broken only by the wind whispering through the trees on Steel Hill. You might not think it to look at it, but this unassuming peak holds a certain majesty. Steel Hill rises nearly 400 meters above sea level, a silent sentinel in the Warramate Flora and Fauna Reserve. It’s a challenging climb, but those who brave its slopes are rewarded with breathtaking views. To the north, the Yarra Valley stretches out before you, a patchwork of vineyards overlooked by the peaks of Mount St. Leonard and Mount Tanglefoot. Reaching the top, you’ll find a trig point marker, a testament to its significance as a landmark. You won’t find a communications tower here though, that sits atop nearby Briarty Hill. This whole area has a history tinged with the echoes of gold mining attempts in the 1860s. Even today, the reserve remains a haven for hikers and nature enthusiasts, a tranquil escape from the bustle of Melbourne, a mere 60 kilometers to the west.
