Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Chicago’s Bucktown neighborhood stands the Covenant Presbyterian Church. This unassuming yet captivating edifice, located on West Dickens Avenue, holds within its walls a rich and layered history. The Covenant Presbyterian Church wasn’t always Presbyterian. It began its life in 1895 as All Saints Cathedral of the Polish National Catholic Church. A group of disgruntled parishioners from St. Hedwig’s, just three blocks north, founded the church. They sought independence from the Resurrectionist Order and the Catholic Church hierarchy. Their dissent culminated in the infamous “Pepper Riots,” a dramatic clash that ultimately led to the birth of All Saints. Dedicated in 1931, during the depths of the Great Depression, the church building itself is a testament to resilience and artistic vision. Designed by John G. Steinbach, the architect behind many of the Northwest Side’s Polish American churches, the structure echoes the grandeur of the “Polish Cathedral style.” Its neo-Gothic architecture, a deliberate departure from the Resurrectionist Order’s favored Renaissance style, symbolized the populist nature of the Polish National Catholic Church. The church’s white imitation cement stone exterior, though pricier than limestone, lends it an enduring elegance reminiscent of Chicago landmarks like the Water Tower. Above the main entrance, intricate carvings frame the emblem of the Polish National Catholic Church, a symbol of freedom and struggle. Inside, the church’s former life as a cathedral is evident in its ornate decorations. A massive stained glass window, installed in the 1940s, depicts Saint Cecilia, patroness of music. The paintings on canvas, the shrines, the altars, the Stations of the Cross, and the canopied doorways all contribute to the rich Gothic motif. Echoes of the renowned Polish artist Stanisław Wyspiański’s work can be seen in the art nouveau-like flourishes of the interior paintings, adding a unique touch to the church’s artistry. In 1993, due to mounting maintenance costs, All Saints Cathedral was sold. A new chapter began as it became the home of the Covenant Presbyterian Church of Chicago. The core group of this congregation had first gathered in 1981, officially organizing as a Presbyterian Church in America in 1982. After years of worshipping in rented spaces in Lincoln Park, they found their permanent home within these historic walls. Today, Covenant Presbyterian Church thrives as a vibrant community, continuing to write its story within the hallowed halls of what was once All Saints Cathedral. The church stands as a testament to the evolving narrative of faith, community, and architectural beauty in Chicago’s ever-changing landscape.
