The Escola Politécnica is the seventh oldest engineering school in the world. It is the oldest in the Americas. The school was founded on December 17 1792. It was initially the Real Academia de Artilharia Fortificação e Desenho.
The Escola Politécnica is considered one of the best engineering institutions in Latin America. It is located in the Centro de Tecnologia on the university campus in Rio de Janeiro.
The Centro de Tecnologia is made up of two schools. These are the Escola de Química and Escola Politécnica. It also houses supplementary bodies. These include the Instituto Alberto Luiz Coimbra de Pós-Graduação e Pesquisa em Engenharia COPPE. Another is the Instituto de Macromoléculas Professora Eloisa Mano IMA. The last one is the Núcleo Interdisciplinar para o Desenvolvimento Social NIDES.
The Escola Politécnica and COPPE share many resources. They share over 70% of the faculty laboratories and facilities. Both institutions contribute professors to graduate and postgraduate courses. The COPPE is responsible for postgraduate courses. The Escola Politécnica handles undergraduate courses. Each unit is divided into departments. These are the smallest administrative units within UFRJ.
The Escola Politécnica has 12 departments. They oversee more than 600 courses annually. These departments include Civil Construction Electrical Engineering and Electronic and Computer Engineering. Also included are Industrial Engineering Mechanical Engineering and Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. Naval and Ocean Engineering Nuclear Engineering and Transport Engineering also exist. Rounding out the list are Graphic Expression Structures and Water Resources and Environment.
The Centro de Ciência e Tecnologia da Faculdade de Engenharia offers various undergraduate courses. Students can earn an engineering degree in 13 fields. The Centro de Ciência e Tecnologia da Faculdade de Engenharia’s courses include Environmental Engineering and Basic Cycle Engineering. Students can study Civil Engineering and Computer and Information Engineering. Automation Engineering and Materials Engineering are options. Production Engineering and Petroleum Engineering also exist. Electrical Engineering and Electronic and Computer Engineering are choices. Rounding out the list are Mechanical Engineering Metallurgical Engineering Naval and Ocean Engineering and Nuclear Engineering.
The Centro de Ciência e Tecnologia da Faculdade de Engenharia also offers postgraduate programs. In 2008 it created three professional master’s programs. These include Environmental Engineering Urban Engineering and Structural Design.
Many notable figures have graduated from the Escola Politécnica. These include Joaquim Levy a former Minister of Finance. Also included is Afonso Henriques de Lima Barreto a famous writer. Antônio Pereira Rebouças Filho and André Rebouças were engineers and abolitionists. Francisco Pereira Passos was the Mayor of Rio de Janeiro.
