Overlooking the rooftops of Remetekertváros, Fazekas-hegy stands as a silent giant. Fazekas-hegy whispers tales of a time long past. This peak, part of the Buda Hills, rises 281 meters above the city. It’s composed of Dachstein limestone, a rock formation that has witnessed centuries of change. Fazekas-hegy isn’t just a natural wonder. It’s also a historical landmark.
In the late 19th century, the valuable limestone and dolomite of Fazekas-hegy became a sought-after resource. The stone quarried here helped build some of Budapest’s grandest buildings. This quarrying activity, however, also revealed a treasure trove of geological wonders. Fossils and rare minerals were unearthed, making Fazekas-hegy a haven for geologists and fossil hunters. Sadly, this abundance of natural wealth also led to over-exploitation. To protect the remaining geological and natural features, Fazekas-hegy was placed under city protection in 1982.
Today, a walk through the oak forests of Fazekas-hegy offers a tranquil escape from the city’s hustle. You can follow the marked hiking trails, including one accessible trail. A yellow-marked tourist trail also crosses the area, leading you deeper into the woods. If you take a detour along the blue triangle trail markers, you’ll discover a hidden relic from World War II: a telegraffitied bunker. Climb atop the bunker, and you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views. You can see the Nagy-Hárs-hegy to the south, the city’s edge to the east, and Máriaremete and the Hármashatár-hegy to the north. This isolated spot, with its crumbling bunker and sweeping vistas, offers a poignant reminder of the past and a breathtaking perspective on the present. While you’re exploring, look for signs of the past. The area around Fazekas-hegy is also home to several caves, including the longest cave on the hill, the Ördögárok Utcai Cave, located on the northern slope. Within the old quarry, you’ll find the Fazekas-hegyi-barlang (Fazekas Hill Cave).
