Two sandstone figures gaze serenely across the Elbe River. They are Die Brückenköpfe. These aren’t just statues. They are silent witnesses to Dresden’s rich history. Specifically they stand guard at the Carolabrücke’s old bridgehead. They represent the “Still Elbe” and the “Stormy Elbe”. Sculpted in 1907 by Friedrich Offermann they survived the bridge’s destruction in 1945.
The Carolabrücke itself has had a dramatic life. The first Carolabrücke a magnificent iron structure was completed in 1895. It boasted three impressive arches spanning the Elbe. It was built to connect the Altstadt and the Neustadt sections of Dresden. Elaborate details adorned its design including planned lion figures. Only the clock towers were actually completed during the initial construction. Bronze groups depicting the Elbe River God and Dresden personified were added later.
Sadly the first Carolabrücke suffered destruction during World War II. Soldiers blew up sections of it in 1945. The remaining parts were eventually demolished. The two Strompfeiler the massive pillars in the Elbe remained for a time. They were finally removed during the construction of the second bridge. The two figures before you though endured.
The second Carolabrücke built from 1967 to 1971 was a very different structure. A modern Spannbetonbrücke. It was designed to be less obtrusive. This ensured an unimpeded view of Dresden’s iconic Elbe skyline. The new bridge was constructed as three separate sections. This proved a challenge during construction. The innovative design involved three joints and complex balancing techniques to ensure stability. Interestingly the Brückenköpfe found a new home integrated into the new bridge’s approach ramp. Part of their bases are even buried.
Today Die Brückenköpfe stand as reminders of Dresden’s resilience and ingenuity. They are a tangible link between past and present. Their enduring presence reflects the city’s determination to rebuild and preserve its history despite enormous loss and transformation. They invite us to reflect on the ebb and flow of the Elbe just as the river itself reflects the tides of history. They are more than just sculptures. They are Dresden’s story etched in stone.
