Have you ever wondered about the stories hidden within the walls of a temple? Sri Subodharamaya in Kandy, Sri Lanka, holds secrets whispered through centuries. As you stand here, the air hums with a quiet energy, a testament to the history that has unfolded on this sacred ground.

Sri Subodharamaya, also known as Karagampitiya Vihara, is a historic Buddhist temple found in Dehiwala, in the Western province of Sri Lanka. It’s a place steeped in tradition, where the echoes of ancient beliefs and practices resonate.

Legend has it that the area where Sri Subodharamaya now stands was once part of the Kingdom of Kotte. King Parakramabahu VI, ruling from 1412 to 1467, gifted the village of Medimala to a nearby shrine. The western part of Medimala, known as Karagampitiya, housed a fishing community that supplied the royal court with fresh fish. To protect these fishermen from calamities and safeguard the kingdom from invaders, King Parakramabahu built a new shrine at the base of a Na tree on a nearby hillock.

This shrine, however, was destroyed by the Portuguese, with its stone pillars used to construct St. Anthony’s Church in Mount Lavinia. The Dutch, during their rule, erected their own church and a rest house in the Karagampitiya area. It is said that the first head of Sri Subodharamaya, Ven. Hikkaduwe Indrajothi Thera, resided in this rest house. The stone pillars taken from the original shrine were finally returned to Sri Subodharamaya in 1881, when the Methodist church in Mount Lavinia was built by the British.

Sri Subodharamaya has a captivating history. The Buddha statues within the temple date back to 1780, believed to be crafted by the same artist who created the statues at Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara. The shrine was completed in 1796, during the reign of King Rajadhi Rajasingha, and a sapling from the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura, the most sacred tree in Buddhism, was planted within its grounds.
