Here stands the Penang Baptist Church. It is a beacon of faith with a history stretching back to the aftermath of World War II.

In 1953, the Southern Baptist Convention from America sent Rev Greene Strother and his wife Martha to Malaya. They came on an evangelical mission. This marked the beginning of the Penang Baptist Church.

Initially, Sunday services were held in the home of Madam Tan Siew Lean. Later, the church acquired a bungalow at 35 Anson Road. This served as a church, a theological seminary, and a residence for the Strothers.

The Penang Baptist Church was officially founded on August 16, 1953. It started with only 29 brothers and sisters. Rev Ho Lo Chee, Madam Tan Siew Lean, and Mr Wayne Siao wholeheartedly built the church.

In December 1954, an English service began. This eventually led to the founding of Georgetown Baptist Church. Penang now has six Baptist Churches. Three conduct services in Chinese. The others are in English. A Gospel Center was also opened.

Several dedicated individuals led the church. Rev Strother, Rev James Lim, and Rev Sidney Smithdt served as unpaid Reverends. Rev Ho Lo Chee, Rev Loh Hui Kee, Rev Oo Chin Guan, Lady Pastor Hong Fei Yen, Pastor David Chuah, Rev John Ong Bee Chong, and Lady Pastor Wong Kam Foong also contributed.

In 1957, Western Missionaries provided US$15,000. Along with offerings from the brothers and sisters, they purchased the current premise at 224 Macalister Road for RM80,000.

Sunday services continued at 35 Anson Road. This lasted until the property was sold in 1967. The church then moved to Macalister Road.

In 1977, the government changed the zoning. This allowed the bungalow to be renovated into a church. The Penang Baptist Church officially opened on January 1, 1978. Mr Teoh Kim Koon was the architect. Mr Oh Lock Inn chaired the building committee.

During its history, several gospel centers were opened. Some closed due to rental issues. In June 1986, a shop house in Macallum Street was purchased. It was renovated into a gospel center. New ministries were launched. Mr and Mrs Caleb Chang and Rev John Ong Bee Chong were involved in church planting. Lady Pastor Wong Kam Foong later took over.

Brother Fellowship, Adult Fellowship, and Boys Brigade were organized. With the cooperation of other fellowships and groups, the church aimed to mobilize its members. They hoped to train them to build the body of the Lord.

Notice the elegant colonial building. Admire its beautiful stained-glass front window. The Penang Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith. It reflects the dedication of its members. It shows the support from both local and overseas communities. Its history is a story of perseverance and divine guidance.
