This tower is a testament to McWilliams’s generosity and his commitment to the Black Rock community. He wanted to give something back, something that would stand for the town’s character and history. It’s hard not to be drawn in by the sleek black metal that houses the clock faces. The clock has witnessed a lot. It has faced the relentless sea air and weathered hailstorms. Vandals have tried to silence it. They shot at it with air pellets, chucked rocks, and even smashed the glass faces. The tower has been moved twice – to make way for a double roundabout. Despite enduring all this, this tower is not heritage listed. It still stands proud, a legacy of a man who loved Black Rock, ready to keep telling time for another century.
