Gazing upon St.-Sebastian-Kirche, one might sense whispers of Poppelsdorf’s past. This magnificent structure stands as a testament to the burgeoning community of the late 19th century. St.-Sebastian-Kirche emerged from the necessity of a growing population, replacing the smaller Poppelsdorfer Kapelle. The cornerstone of St.-Sebastian-Kirche was laid in 1888. The renowned architect Gerhard Franz Langenberg designed the church. The building showcases a blend of neo-Romanesque and neo-Gothic styles, a hallmark of the era’s architectural sensibilities. Due to financial constraints, the construction of St.-Sebastian-Kirche unfolded in two phases. By 1890, the choir and central nave were completed. However, the yoke and facade, complete with the majestic bell tower, weren’t finished until 1908. In 1909, four bronze bells were cast and installed, their melodious chimes filling the air. Three of these original bells still resonate within the tower today. St.-Sebastian-Kirche remains a vital part of the Bonn-Melbtal Catholic parish community. It serves as a spiritual haven and a reminder of Poppelsdorf’s rich history.
