Have you ever imagined diving into a world of sunken treasures and maritime history? The Eliza Ramsden is a sunken ship off the coast of Melbourne, a testament to the treacherous waters of Port Phillip Bay. Imagine sailing the open seas, only to crash upon the rocks of the infamous Corsair Rock. This was the fate of the Eliza Ramsden in 1875. The Eliza Ramsden was a beautiful iron barque, named after the wife of Reverend Samuel Ramsden, its wealthy owner. The ship, with only one deck, was used for transporting cargo. It was a stunning vessel, considered one of the finest ships in Melbourne, built in Scotland. However, tragedy struck on July 24th, 1875 as the Eliza Ramsden sailed towards Newcastle with ballast. Captain Steuart, despite being an experienced sailor, was unfamiliar with the treacherous waters of Port Phillip Bay. The ship hit Corsair Rock near Point Nepean. It happened so quickly that Captain Steuart had to immediately call for help. The crew abandoned the ship and luckily, a pilot boat from Queenscliff arrived just in time to rescue them. But the Eliza Ramsden continued to be tossed around by strong currents and eventually ended up on the sea floor, with only its masts visible. Although the ship’s wreck was a navigational hazard, it was finally removed in the 1960s by blasting the masts with explosives. The Eliza Ramsden is a testament to Australia’s maritime history. Its wreck has become a popular diving site for those who wish to explore the ship’s secrets. The wreck rests on the sandy bottom of Port Phillip Bay, giving divers a chance to imagine the last moments of the Eliza Ramsden’s courageous crew.
