As you stand before Heaton’s Monument, let your mind wander back to a time when the shores of Port Phillip Bay were a bustling hub of activity. It was here, at the Quarantine Station, that the monument stands, a testament to a tragic chapter in Australia’s history.

Heaton’s Monument was erected in 1856, a somber reminder of the many lives lost during the devastating typhus outbreak that swept through the colony. The cemetery, where the monument now stands, was built in haste in 1852. It was needed because of the stricken clipper “Ticonderoga” that arrived with its passengers suffering from typhus fever.

It was a deeply sad period for the community. Sadly, many of the immigrants succumbed to the disease on the voyage or shortly after landing. This tragedy left a deep and lasting scar on the landscape of Port Phillip Bay, a reminder of the harsh realities faced by those seeking a new life in Australia.

Heaton, the supervisor who built much of the Quarantine Station, was deeply moved by the suffering he witnessed. He decided to use his own resources to erect this monument, as a tribute to those who perished. It stands tall and proud, a symbol of resilience and a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope for a brighter future.
