A vacant lot. That’s all that remains of Cabrini-Green. Except for one structure. Stranger’s Home Missionary Baptist Church stands sentinel. A brick building. Its architectural style unique among the newer constructions.

Stranger’s Home Church. More than just a building. It was a religious center. A haven for Black families. Surrounded once by the towers of Cabrini-Green. Now. It stands alone. Vacant for over a decade.

But its story is far from over. Marques “Merk” Elliston and Cher’Don Reynolds grew up in Cabrini-Green. They witnessed the demolition of their neighborhood. They remember Stranger’s Home Church. A place of comfort and community. They want to revive it.

They have a vision. The Cabrini Art House. A creative and business hub. Storytelling. Creative projects. Celebration. Education. A safe haven. For former and current residents.

Stranger’s Home Church held more than just religious services. In 1972 William Walker painted “All of Mankind” on its wall. A powerful mural. Depicting people of all races. Holding hands in unity. An ode to Black families and leaders. A masterpiece.

Tragically the mural was whitewashed in 2015. Years after Cabrini-Green’s demolition. The church was slated to become a home. The mural lost. But not forgotten.

Elliston and Reynolds are fighting to restore it. Along with organizations like the All Mankind Coalition and the National Public Housing Museum. They’re raising millions of dollars. They hope to buy the church. They aim to restore the mural. To bring back the culture. The spirit of the community.

Stranger’s Home Church represents more than just bricks and mortar. It is a symbol of resilience. Of hope. A testament to the enduring spirit of Cabrini-Green. A place where the past can inform the future. Where art and community can thrive. A beacon. A symbol of unity in a transformed landscape. Stranger’s Home Church. A place reborn.
