Remember the name John Passmore Edwards as we stand before the Shepherd’s Bush Library Plaque. This plaque marks a building that was once a vital hub for the community. It was one of 24 public libraries founded by the Victorian newspaper proprietor and philanthropist John Passmore Edwards.

The Shepherd’s Bush Library was designed by architect Maurice B Adams. Adams also designed five of the Libraries funded by Passmore Edwards. They shared a belief in self-help. They also thought that good architecture would provide educational institutions. These institutions would educate the British working man and help give Britain a competitive edge.

The foundation stone for the Shepherd’s Bush Library was laid on July 4, 1895. Passmore Edwards himself did the honors. The library officially opened its doors in 1896. Archibald Primrose the 5th Earl of Rosebery opened it on June 25, 1896.

Passmore Edwards dedicated the library to the memory of Leigh Hunt and Charles Keene. Both Hunt and Keene lived in Hammersmith. Hunt was a poet and journalist. Keene was an artist and Punch cartoonist.

Edwards provided £5,000 towards the £6,000 the library cost to build and furnish. Residents showed their appreciation to Lord Rosebury and Edwards. The Uxbridge Road was decorated with flags and flowers. Banners announced a welcome to the visitors.

The library is in English Renaissance style. It is made of red brick with Portland stone. The front gable shows a life-size sculpture. It represents the Shepherd in the Bush.

In the early 20th century many of Shepherd’s Bush’s new inhabitants were poor. Irish laborers sought work in London. This created fears of urban slums.

The library served the community until 2009. The Hammersmith and Fulham Borough Council then closed the library. The library service moved to a new building.

In October 2011, the building reopened as the new home of the Bush Theatre. The building is listed as a Building of Merit. It deserves protection.

So, as you pass by the Shepherd’s Bush Library Plaque remember the man who made it all possible. Remember John Passmore Edwards and his commitment to education and community. His legacy lives on in this building and the countless lives it has touched.
