Is it a chariot or is it a celebration? Look closely at Le Triomphe de la République. This isn’t just a statue, it’s a storybook in bronze! Commissioned to celebrate the French Republic, Le Triomphe de la République almost ended up in a completely different square. The artists, the Morice brothers, won the original competition to create a monument for the Place de la République. Luckily for us, the jury loved Jules Dalou’s design so much they asked him to cast it for the Place de la Nation. Dalou, a fervent Republican, poured his heart into this project. Look up at the triumphant Republic standing on a chariot. This represents the Nation, pulled by powerful lions guided by the illuminating torch of Liberty. Notice the figures flanking the chariot: Labor, embodied by a strong blacksmith, and Justice, symbolized by a woman holding the scales of fairness. Even the children tell a story. One holds a book and tools, representing Instruction, while the other with scales embodies Equity. And there, at the back, Peace showers blessings from her cornucopia. It’s a vision of progress, unity, and hope. Dalou’s masterpiece, Le Triomphe de la République, wasn’t an easy feat. He envisioned the figures at a smaller scale, but the city desired grandeur. The project ballooned in size and scope. Dalou even wanted to use an almost forgotten method, lost-wax casting, to ensure the finest quality.
