Have you ever wondered how a place known for its stunning natural beauty became the heart of such a grand institution of learning? The University of Peradeniya is not simply a school, it is a living testament to Sri Lanka’s rich tradition of academics, a vibrant community, and a captivating history.

Standing at the foot of the Hanthana mountain range, the University of Peradeniya is a haven of learning and discovery, sprawled across a sprawling 700 hectares. It all goes back to the late 19th century when the idea of a university was just a seedling planted in the minds of passionate Sri Lankans. Slowly, the dream developed, eventually leading to the establishment of the University of Ceylon, Sri Lanka’s first-ever university in 1942.

Fast forward to 1946, and the dream started to take shape, though it was hindered by the recent Second World War. The university, still in Colombo at that time, faced a major hurdle – the shortage of construction materials. It was a time marked by temporary measures and a yearning for a permanent home. The solution? An expansive site surrounded by lush greenery and stunning landscapes, a location that would later become the University of Peradeniya you see before you. The grand vision of the University of Ceylon was realized on 6th October 1952 with the official establishment of the university in its new home in Peradeniya. The move marked a turning point in Sri Lanka’s history, ushering in an era of knowledge and academia, and a new era for Sri Lanka’s higher education.

In 1954, Queen Elizabeth II graced the university with her presence, marking the moment where this magnificent institution blossomed into a full-fledged university. The university’s impressive architecture, sprawling campuses, and state-of-the-art facilities are a testament to its dedication to knowledge and its commitment to fostering a vibrant learning environment. It is a place where cultures blend, ideas ignite, and students from diverse backgrounds come together to share, learn, and grow.

The University of Peradeniya has a compelling story to tell, a story of perseverance, a tale where dreams were nurtured into reality, a story of Sri Lanka’s journey towards progress, a story where knowledge truly is the eye unto all.
