Have you ever wondered about the hidden stories of a lake? Stand here, right in front of Nymphaea Lily Lake, and let me take you on a journey back in time. This peaceful oasis is a captivating piece of Melbourne’s history.

The lake, part of the Royal Botanic Gardens, wasn’t always a tranquil haven. It was created by William Guilfoyle, the gardens’ curator from 1873 to 1909, who envisioned a picturesque landscape. He filled the lake with water from the Yarra River, but over the decades, silt and mud accumulated, choking the water lilies and threatening the life of the swans and ducks. The lake was slowly poisoning its inhabitants.

In the 1980s, a group of dedicated volunteers spearheaded an ambitious “Save The Lake” campaign. Led by Beth Higgs, a passionate member of the Friends of the Royal Botanic Gardens group, they rallied the community and raised funds to restore this beloved icon. They held festivals, sold swan-stamped shortbread biscuits, and garnered support from influential figures like Elisabeth Murdoch. Through their unwavering efforts, they succeeded in dredging the lake, removing the invasive water lilies, and restoring the health of Nymphaea Lily Lake.

After a dramatic rescue effort, the lake once again became a sanctuary for wildlife. As you look across the water, you can’t help but be amazed by the vibrant colours of the water lilies and the grace of the swans gliding through the water. From a polluted haven to a symbol of community spirit, Nymphaea Lily Lake reminds us of the power of human resilience and love for nature.
