Slipping through the gate onto Square des Droits de l’Enfant, imagine children’s laughter echoing through the years. This isn’t just a park. It’s a testament to the rights of children, nestled within Lyon’s vibrant 6th arrondissement along Boulevard des Brotteaux. Square des Droits de l’Enfant translates to “Square of the Rights of the Child.” It’s a relatively small space, about 749 square meters. But its size belies its significance. The square provides a simple playground. It’s bordered by the walls of neighboring buildings to the north and south. From the eastern edge, you can glimpse the backs of buildings along Rue Waldeck Rousseau. This area was likely once occupied by a building, later demolished to create this open space. The square becomes particularly lively on sunny afternoons, especially with the nearby school letting out. The name, Square des Droits de l’Enfant, carries a weight beyond its playful purpose. It echoes the nearby Rue des Droits de l’Homme, “Street of Human Rights,” located behind the railway line. A commemorative plaque within the square remembers the Children of Izieu and their educators, victims of wartime atrocities. Their memory is further honored with the Jardin des Enfants d’Izieu, Rue Sabine et Miron Zlatin, and a dedicated space at Place Carnot. A quote from John Donne graces the plaque, adding a layer of reflection to this space dedicated to the young. In 2022, an experimental lighting system was installed, illuminating the square as you enter and switching off as you leave. Square des Droits de l’Enfant is open from 8 am to 10 pm between May 1st and September 30th. It is easily accessible by public transport (TCL) and Velo’v bike-sharing stations. The square is a poignant reminder of the importance of protecting the rights of every child.
