“So we are ambassadors for Christ” reads a quote. This quote greets visitors of the Apostolic Nunciature to Indonesia. Right here at Jalan Medan Merdeka Timur 18 in Central Jakarta stands a unique diplomatic mission. This is more than just an embassy. It represents the Vatican in Indonesia. The Apostolic Nunciature acts as the Vatican Embassy in Jakarta.

But what exactly does the Apostolic Nunciature do? It serves two crucial roles. First, it’s the official embassy of Vatican City. The Pope’s ambassador resides here. He represents the Pope as head of state to the Indonesian President. Second, it acts as a vital link. It connects the Catholic Church in Indonesia with the Pope. The Nuncio ensures clear communication.

Let’s step back in time. The relationship between Indonesia and the Holy See began in 1950. On January 4, 1950, the Holy See recognized the Republic of United States of Indonesia. Just six days later, both parties agreed to establish diplomatic ties. Embassies were planned for Jakarta and Rome.

On March 16, 1950, Mgr George de Jonghe d’Ardoye became the first Papal Representative to Indonesia. He presented his credentials to President Sukarno on April 6. Similarly, Ambassador Sukardjo Wirjopranoto presented his credentials to Pope Pius XII on May 25. This marked the official start of diplomatic relations.

The Catholic Church’s presence in Indonesia has a long history. It dates back to the 16th century. Catholic missionaries arrived in the Moluccas Islands. Jesuit Fathers played a key role. St Francis Xavier preached in Ambon, Ternate, and Halmahera in the 1540s. Dominican and Franciscan Friars were also active. They served in Flores, Timor, Borneo, and Java.

The Apostolic Nunciature aims to serve the Catholic Church in Indonesia. It strengthens communication between the Holy See and local churches. The growth of the Catholic Church fostered dialogue. This encouraged the Holy See to establish diplomatic ties with Indonesia. Collaboration on moral values, peace, and religious freedom became priorities.

The Holy See also established ties with ASEAN on March 23, 2011. This fostered interfaith dialogue. It also strengthened religious understanding in Southeast Asia.

Many Apostolic Nuncios have served here. Georges-Marie de Jonghe d’Ardoye served from 1947 to 1955. Domenico Enrici served as Apostolic internuncio from 1955 to 1958. Joseph Mees was the Apostolic Nuncio from 1969 to 1973. Piero Pioppo is the current Apostolic Nuncio, serving since 2017.

The building itself reflects its importance. The Apostolic Nunciature stands as a symbol of faith. It embodies diplomatic relations. It’s a place where the Vatican’s presence is felt in Indonesia.
