Ever wondered about the bank that started a financial revolution in the UK? That bank is Monzo Bank. We’re standing right in front of its London headquarters.
Monzo is not just another bank. It’s a British online bank. Monzo is based here in London. It emerged as one of the first app-based challenger banks in the UK.
Let’s dive into the story of Monzo Bank.
Monzo’s journey began in 2015. It was originally founded as Mondo. The founders were Tom Blomfield, Jonas Huckestein, Jason Bates, Paul Rippon and Gary Dolman. Interestingly the team met while working at Starling Bank.
In February 2016, Monzo achieved a record. It raised £1 million in just 96 seconds through crowdfunding. The investment platform was Crowdcube.
But there was a naming issue. In June 2016, another company challenged the name “Mondo”. The challenger had a similar name. A contest was held for a new name. “Monzo” was chosen. The legal name became Monzo Bank Ltd in August 2016.
By May 2017, Monzo had reached a milestone. Customers had spent over £250 million using its prepaid cards. The user base included 200000 customers.
April 2017 marked a turning point. Monzo received its full banking license. The Prudential Regulation Authority and the Financial Conduct Authority granted the license. Before this, Monzo operated with a restricted banking license. The full license allowed Monzo to offer current accounts. Previously, only pre-paid debit cards were available.
The full current account launched in October 2017. Users of the prepaid card were asked to switch. By April 2018, Monzo had 500000 current account customers.
Monzo reached one million customers in October 2018. LinkedIn UK named it the best tech startup to work for. That same month, Monzo became a “unicorn”. A fundraising round of £85 million valued the company at £1 billion.
In August 2019, a security issue arose. Monzo inadvertently logged 480000 customer PINs. This made them accessible to its internal engineering team. The PINs were transmitted in the query string of an HTTPS request. That same month, Monzo launched its loan products for customers.
March 2020 saw the creation of business bank accounts. These were for sole traders and small-to-medium sized businesses. In April 2020, Monzo introduced its first loan products for personal current account customers.
A leadership change occurred in May 2020. Tom Blomfield moved from CEO to president. TS Anil became the CEO. Blomfield left the company in January 2021. He cited personal pressures heightened by the coronavirus pandemic.
Monzo achieved its first profitable month in March 2023. In 2024, CNBC named Monzo to the Disruptor 50 list.
Monzo reported its first annual profit in March 2024. The profit was £15.4 million. This was a significant improvement from the previous year’s £116.3 million loss. The company also announced plans to open an office in Ireland. This would facilitate expansion into Europe. Revenue more than doubled to £514.4 million. This increase was due to increased lending and savings products.
As of June 2024, Monzo boasts over 9.3 million customers. Its revenue reached £880.0 million. The company employs 3736 people.
Monzo offers various products and services. These include current accounts, savings accounts, and lending products. These are available for both personal and business customers.

January 2019 saw a partnership with Flux. The partnership added itemized receipts and loyalty points.
Monzo launched Flex in September 2021. Flex is a buy-now-pay-later product.
In April 2024, Monzo discontinued its Plus and Premium plans. It introduced three new subscription services. These are Monzo Extra, Monzo Perks, and Monzo Max.
July 2024 brought the announcement of Monzo Pensions. This feature will allow customers to combine existing pension schemes. Customers can also open a Self-Invested Personal Pension with Monzo.
