Consider the grand sweep of history that has unfolded right here at Queen Mary Court. It stands as part of the Old Royal Naval College, a site of immense historical and architectural significance. The Queen Mary Court is a Grade I listed building.

Originally, this location was the site of Bella Court. Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester, built it. Later, Queen Margaret renamed it Palace of Placentia. Henry VII rebuilt it, and it became known as Greenwich Palace. Tudor monarchs like Henry VIII, Mary I, and Elizabeth I were born here. Henry VIII favored this palace.

However, the palace fell into disrepair during the English Civil War. In 1694, it was mostly demolished. Only an incomplete building by John Webb remained. This remaining structure was completed and used by the hospital.

In 1692, the Royal Hospital for Seamen at Greenwich was established. Mary II was inspired to create it after seeing wounded sailors returning from the Battle of La Hogue. Initially, the hospital remodeled a wing of Greenwich Palace. It then expanded. Architectural highlights included the Chapel and the Painted Hall. Sir James Thornhill painted the Painted Hall between 1707 and 1726. The hospital closed in 1869.

In 1873, the buildings transformed into a training establishment for the Royal Navy. It became the Royal Naval College, Greenwich. The Royal Navy left in 1998. The Greenwich Foundation for the Old Royal Naval College took over.

Since 1998, the site has been revitalized. New uses and activities have breathed life into it. The Greenwich Foundation manages and controls it. In 1999, parts of Queen Mary Court were leased to the University of Greenwich. Trinity College of Music also leased a part. This mix created a unique educational and cultural environment.

Since 2002, the entire site opened to visitors. People can visit the Painted Hall, the chapel, and the grounds. A visitor center is available. Guided tours are offered.

In 2005, the Nelson Room opened. Nelson’s coffin was held here. The room contains a statue of Nelson. Memorabilia, paintings, and information are displayed.

The Old Royal Naval College is a focal point for business and community activities. Trinity College of Music provides musicians for events. The Higher Education Funding Council supports this outreach.

Queen Mary Court has also served as a backdrop for numerous films and television shows. These include The Bounty, Patriot Games, and Shanghai Knights. Other productions include Four Weddings and a Funeral, The Madness of King George, and The Mummy Returns. More recent filming includes The Diplomat, Eastern Promises, and The Wolf Man.

In 2014, the Old Royal Naval College began restoring the Painted Hall. The conservation project focused on the Lower Hall. It included public ceiling tours. In March 2019, the hall reopened.

Queen Mary Court stands as a testament to British history. From royal palace to naval hospital to film location, it continues to evolve. Its blend of history, culture, and education makes it a unique and captivating place to visit. Remember the layers of time you have absorbed today at Queen Mary Court.
