Once upon a time in Levallois-Perret a quiet village nestled near Paris a transformation began. Avenue de Levallois was not yet a grand avenue. It was a humble collection of pathways. The story of Avenue de Levallois is deeply intertwined with the history of Levallois-Perret itself. Before the 19th century this area was largely farmland. A few farmers and two large estates Villiers and La Planchette existed. In 1822 Jean-Jacques Perret attempted a housing development. He failed. His project Champ Perret lacked good access and the plots were too big. However his failure taught a valuable lesson.

Enter Nicolas-Eugène Levallois. A carpenter turned bar owner he envisioned a village. He partnered with surveyor Rivet. Together they drew up plans for a village with perpendicular streets. This was a clever design. It addressed Perret’s earlier mistakes. This innovative plan attracted buyers. They liked the affordable housing and plentiful amenities. This new settlement was called Village Levallois. It quickly developed. An important feature was its autonomy. Levallois envisioned a town with its own church town hall and school.

The new village grew rapidly. In 1854 a second train station opened. Businesses flocked to Levallois. By 1855 the church was complete. Sewers and streetlights were installed. A market opened in 1858. Famous perfume makers such as Oriza-Legrand and Roger et Gallet established factories there. In 1866 the first school was built. Village Levallois was thriving. It had become a bustling commercial center.

On June 30 1866 Napoleon III made Levallois-Perret an official commune. This was a monumental occasion. The name combined both Perret and Levallois recognizing their contributions. Gustave Eiffel established workshops there. The pieces for the Eiffel Tower and the Statue of Liberty were manufactured in Levallois. Avenue de Levallois became a testament to the town’s industrial might. The avenue was no longer a collection of paths. It was the road to progress.

The story of Levallois-Perret and Avenue de Levallois is one of remarkable innovation and resilience. From humble beginnings a small village transformed into a vibrant commune. This transformation is reflected in the very streets. Avenue de Levallois stands as a reminder of the vision and determination of those who built this unique Parisian suburb.
