Why does this cross stand here? This is the Bertramskreuz. It marks a tragic event from long ago.

Let me tell you the story of the Bertramskreuz. This stone cross commemorates Wernerus Bertram. The inscription reads “IM H Wernerus Bertram starb hier 16 Augusti 1689 GGDS”. This translates to “In memory of H Wernerus Bertram died here 16 August 1689 GGDS”.

Bonn has seen many changes. In 30 BC, it began as a small Germanic settlement. Romans established a military settlement between 13 BC and 9 BC. This was known as ‘Bonna’. Later, it became a major Roman camp and fortress. Remains of ‘Castra Bonnensia’ are still visible.

Bonn became more important in the 13th century. It became the capital of the Electorate and Archbishopric of Cologne. French Revolutionary forces occupied Bonn in 1794. In 1815, it was awarded to Prussia.

Bonn developed slowly until the late 19th century. It became a residential town for the wealthy. The city was severely damaged during World War II. It grew rapidly after 1949. Bonn was chosen as the provisional capital of West Germany.

Bonn is known for its history and culture. It was the capital of West Germany from 1949 to 1990. Ludwig van Beethoven was born here in 1770. The city proudly celebrates his legacy.

The Bertramskreuz stands as a reminder. It connects us to a specific life. It connects us to a specific death on August 16, 1689. This wayside cross reminds us of Bonn’s long history. It reminds us of individual stories within that history. It connects us to Wernerus Bertram and simpler times.
