Whispers echo through these walls. They tell tales of generations who first learned to read and write here at École élémentaire Le Centre.

Let’s step back in time. Imagine France in 1833. The Guizot Law mandated schools for boys in every town with over 500 residents. This was the beginning of free, secular education. École élémentaire Le Centre embodies that revolutionary spirit.

École élémentaire signifies elementary school in France. It welcomes children from age six. This follows their time in maternelle which is similar to kindergarten. Together, the maternelle and École élémentaire form what’s known as primary school.

The main goal at École élémentaire Le Centre is to teach fundamental knowledge. Reading writing and math are top priorities. But artistic and fun activities remain important, especially for younger students.

Did you know that under the old system there used to be roughly 10000 schools. These were mostly religious or Catholic schools. There was only one school for roughly three parishes.

The French Revolution intended to establish schools. They would educate children of all genders in French. There would be one school for every 400 residents.

Jules Ferry introduced a law about secularism in 1882. It set aside one day a week for religious instruction. For many years students had Thursdays off for this. Then it shifted to Wednesdays.

The school week has changed considerably over time. Before 1969 students attended 30 hours per week. Classes were held Monday Tuesday Wednesday Friday and Saturday. From 1972 to 2008 students went to school for 27 hours a week. They attended classes Monday Tuesday Thursday Friday and Saturday morning.

Since 2013 most École élémentaire followed a four and a half day week. They attend school Monday Tuesday Wednesday morning Thursday and Friday. After class there were extracurricular activities run by municipal staff. In 2017 Education Minister Jean-Michel Blanquer allowed schools to switch back to a four-day week.

École élémentaire Le Centre is a place where children learn and grow. It’s a cornerstone of the community. It helps shape young minds. It prepares them for the future.

Today École élémentaire Le Centre continues this important mission. It adapts to modern times. It embraces new teaching methods. It fosters a love of learning.

Remember the echoes we heard when we arrived. They remind us of the countless lives shaped within these walls. École élémentaire Le Centre is more than just a school. It is a legacy. It is a symbol of education in France.
