Why did they call it “Dürrenwettersbach”? Here in Hohenwettersbach, the name echoes a time of thirst. The year is 1262. The first mention of this place, not as Hohenwettersbach, but as Dürrenwettersbach. “Dürre,” meaning drought, painted a vivid picture of a village parched by its geographical location. Imagine a community high on the mountain, nestled between Wolfartsweier and Grünwettersbach, struggling with a constant water shortage. Hohenwettersbach, as we know it today, carries this legacy in its very name. Fast forward to 1706. Erbprinz Karl Wilhelm acquired the village. He saw potential beyond the drought. He renamed it Hohenwettersbach and transformed the landscape. A Lustschlösschen, a pleasure palace, sprang up in what is now the Lustgarten, a testament to his vision. The prince also used Hohenwettersbach to provide for his illegitimate daughter. He granted the Hofgut Hohenwettersbach to Karoline Luise von Wangen as a Kunkellehen in 1714. This act secured her future and further shaped the destiny of Hohenwettersbach. The village grew, becoming a place of toil and industry. Around 1760, workers flocked here, employed in the construction of the grand schloss and the surrounding agricultural lands. These laborers, allowed to settle on the lord’s land, lived a life of dependence and often, stark poverty. Their stories are woven into the very fabric of Hohenwettersbach. The fight for autonomy finally bore fruit in 1864. Hohenwettersbach became an independent community, casting off the shackles of its feudal past. Yet, its ties to Karlsruhe remained strong. On January 1, 1972, Hohenwettersbach officially became a district of Karlsruhe, marking a new chapter in its long and fascinating story. Today, Hohenwettersbach thrives as a vibrant part of Karlsruhe, a place where history whispers from every corner.
