“Ever wondered how a mosque can carry the legacy of a revered religious scholar?” Today we stand before the Tunahan Camii. It is a testament to Ottoman architectural principles. This mosque in Başakşehir’s 4. Etap was commissioned by KİPTAŞ. Construction began in 2000 and the Tunahan Camii opened its doors to worshippers in 2004.

The Tunahan Camii accommodates 5,000 people. This includes the outer prayer section. Spanning 1500 square meters, it features two minarets. A large dome reaches 48 meters high and is surrounded by 24 smaller domes.

Inside the Tunahan Camii, you’ll find four columns. There are also two mezzanine floors surrounding three sides. Two imam rooms serve the community. The Tunahan Camii also houses a two-story library. It holds 2,000 religious and cultural books. The library operates on an “take, read, return” system.

The garden has four entrances. It also includes a fountain and a camellia. The mosque is named after Süleyman Hilmi Tunahan. He was a religious scholar of the late period.

While the Tunahan Camii reflects Ottoman design, another mosque stands out in Istanbul: The Blue Mosque. It is formally known as the Sultan Ahmed Mosque. Sultan Ahmet I commissioned it aiming to rival the Hagia Sophia. The Blue Mosque boasts six minarets, an unusual feature at the time. This caused a stir, as only the Kaaba in Mecca had as many.

Inside, the Blue Mosque stuns with blue tiles. More than 20,000 Iznik ceramic tiles decorate the interior. They feature flowers, trees, and abstract patterns. The Blue Mosque can hold about 10,000 worshippers. It remains a busy place of worship.

Both the Tunahan Camii and the Blue Mosque enrich Istanbul’s religious landscape. Each embodies unique architectural and historical significance. The Tunahan Camii honors a scholar. The Blue Mosque showcases Ottoman ambition. They both invite visitors to appreciate Islamic art and culture. They offer a tranquil space for reflection.
