What whispers through the years echo from the Brentwood United Reformed Church? Right here, in the heart of Brentwood, stands a testament to almost two centuries of faith and community. Brentwood United Reformed Church has graced this town since 1847. Its history is even older, though. It traces its roots back to a secession from the Brentwood Old Meeting in 1755. The congregation, initially Independent, first worshipped in a hired room. They then built a meeting-house on Warley East Lane (later King’s Road). Sadly, this meeting-house was demolished in 1847 to make way for the current church on New Road. Don’t let its age fool you. The Brentwood United Reformed Church isn’t just a relic of the past. It has been a vibrant hub for the community, hosting Scouts, Guides, Brownies, and Cubs in its hall. It also housed a lively junior church, a Wednesday Lunch Club for seniors, and Sacred Space gatherings. Sadly, after 176 years of serving the people of Brentwood, the church held its last service on 8th July 2023. The decision to close was difficult but necessary, driven by falling attendance and an aging congregation. However, the legacy of faith and community service embodied by the Brentwood United Reformed Church continues to resonate, a testament to the enduring power of shared belief.
