The NSG Kiesgrube Flerzheim was established in the late 1990s. Even now, gravel extraction continues in parts of the area. This creates a unique environment. Habitats exist side by side. Industry and nature meet here.
The Kiesgrube Flerzheim is more than just a gravel pit. It has become a haven for wildlife. A large lake landscape has developed. Expansive reed beds provide shelter. This creates a large interconnected wetland. The transition from farmland to the Kottenforst forest is seamless here.

Sand martins find this area particularly attractive.
In fact, Kiesgrube Flerzheim is one of the best locations near Bonn. It’s for spotting sand martins. Other birds found here include blackbirds and white wagtails. Blue tits and skylarks are also present. Grasshopper warblers, and yellowhammers add to the diversity. You may spot grey herons. Greenfinches, mistle thrushes, and grey partridges all live here.
To get here using a GPS device, set your destination to Hauptstrasse 192, 53913 Swisttal. Continue on this road for about 800 meters. Turn left at the bend. Drive another 1.3 kilometers. The Kiesgrube Flerzheim will be on your right.
Since 1980, Mineral Baustoff GmbH and Rhein-Umschlag GmbH & Co KG have jointly operated the Rheinbach-Flerzheim quartzite quarry. Kieswerk Rheinbach GmbH & Co KG or KWR has been based in Rheinbach since 1987. In 1989, they started processing and producing concrete gravel.
