Established in 1892 Westminster Presbyterian Church in Dallas is the second oldest Presbyterian Church in the city. It began as a response to the growing need for a second Presbyterian church in the rapidly expanding north Dallas area. Dr A P Smith pastor of First Presbyterian Church chaired the commission that established Westminster. The organizational meeting took place on March 13 1892 with seventeen charter members. Just one week later three more joined.
The early years saw remarkable growth. The congregation quickly expanded from fifty members in its first year to 144 by March 1898. Westminster moved several times as it grew. Initially it was on leased land. Later a lot was purchased at 2118 Thomas Street. A larger frame building was erected there. Then it was moved to the corner of McKinney and Fairmont streets and enlarged. By 1908 Westminster had 350 members needing even more space. They moved again to Fairmont and Mahon. This building wasn’t dedicated until 1923.
The church faced many changes throughout the twentieth century. World War II ended and Dallas continued to grow. This led to a decision to move farther north. Four acres were purchased at Devonshire and Purdue. For nine years the congregation held services in a temporary frame building described as “GI Gothic”. Then in 1954 ground was broken for a new Georgian-style building. This new building opened in September 1955. It had ample space for the 637 members. The sanctuary has graceful columns and a portico.
Over the years Westminster has played a significant role in the community. It was instrumental in the founding of three other Presbyterian congregations. Westminster also supported missionaries worldwide. It helped students through college scholarships and internships. Christian education has always been a priority. There were many adult classes and dedicated teachers with seminary training. The church helped alleviate hunger and homelessness in Dallas. Westminster also worked with other churches on mission trips and outreach programs. Westminster Presbyterian Church continues to serve its community. It shows God’s love through its acts of service and commitment to faith.
