A half-acre haven in Uptown Chicago Broncho Billy Playlot Park whispers tales of silver screen cowboys. This small park nestled between Montrose Avenue and Clark Street wasn’t always a playground. Before 1993 it was just vacant land. The Chicago Park District acquired the land from the city and the Board of Education. The Uptown community lacked recreational spaces. This park changed that.

Broncho Billy Playlot Park’s name holds a secret. It honors Gilbert M Anderson a silent film star. He was known as Broncho Billy. Anderson founded Essanay Studios nearby on Argyle Street. His career started with the 1903 Western The Great Train Robbery. He and George Spoor formed Essanay in 1907. They produced The Life of Jesse James the following year. Anderson’s Broncho Billy character was beloved. He starred in 376 films. Essanay Studios however closed in 1917.

Today Broncho Billy Playlot Park offers a spray pool and a soft surface playground. Children laugh as they splash and play. This small park is a testament to community need and cinematic history. The park’s creation brought much-needed recreational space to the densely populated Uptown area. It stands as a reminder of the park’s cinematic past. It’s a small slice of Chicago history a green space where kids play. The legacy of Broncho Billy lives on in the very name of this beloved park. It is a tiny but significant part of Chicago’s story.
