Why would a church dedicated to the patron saint of travelers find itself landlocked, you might wonder? Welcome to St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church. A place where, despite recent upheaval, the spirit of journey and fellowship remains strong. Founded in 1957 during a time of great change in Austin, St. Christopher’s began modestly. Seven families gathered in a park, eventually holding their first service in a member’s home. The church’s name, a beacon to those on a journey, proved fitting. They moved from a country club ballroom to even a seminary before finally establishing their own roots on Southwest Loop 820 in 1958. The church grew, evolving from mission to parish, adding buildings and eventually a magnificent 1908 Pilcher pipe organ, its voice soaring with the aspirations of its congregation. However, life, like faith, is rarely static. In 2021, a dispute within the diocese forced St. Christopher’s to relinquish its physical home. Although a time of loss, this became a testament to their patron saint’s guidance. The community, stripped of its physical embodiment, discovered the true church resided not in bricks and mortar but within its people. Welcomed with open arms by St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, they continue their journey, proving that the spirit of St. Christopher, the spirit of travel and perseverance, persists even when the destination changes.
