“Can you imagine this serene landscape once echoed with the clamor of a bustling gold mining town?” Diamond Hill, as peaceful as it seems today, was once a hive of activity. Situated 5 km south of Bendigo and about 1 km west of the Spring Gully Reservoir, Diamond Hill was a thriving gold mining village. Its story begins with a sparkling detail. Legend says the hill earned its name from a distinctive diamond-shaped rock that crowned its peak.

By 1873, the discovery of gold brought not just fortune seekers, but families seeking a new life. The population grew, and with it, the need for a school, which opened its doors in 1874. The heartbeat of Diamond Hill was fueled by companies like the Great Comet Quartz Mining, Golden Fleece Quartz Mining, Albert Tribute, and Albert Gold Mining and Crushing. The Australian handbook of 1903 tells us that the gold rush wasn’t a fleeting fever. Mining operations thrived even after the turn of the century, indicating the richness of the land.

Life wasn’t all work and no play. A Methodist church, a symbol of community and faith, stood tall. After a fire ravaged the schoolhouse in 1908, this very church doubled as a makeshift classroom, its halls echoing with the laughter of children, until the school closed permanently in 1926. But like many gold rushes, the fervor eventually cooled. By 1933, the once bustling population of 249 (as recorded in the 1911 census) had dwindled to a mere 56. Today, Diamond Hill rests quietly. Its vibrant past, a testament to the dreams and aspirations of those who sought their fortune.
