Gazing at Malsch, a small German town nestled at the edge of the Black Forest, evokes a sense of timelessness. Malsch is located only 15 kilometers south of the bustling city of Karlsruhe and 10 kilometers east of Rastatt. The municipality of Malsch encompasses not only the main town but also the charming villages of Sulzbach, Waldprechtsweier, and Völkresbach. Völkresbach holds a unique distinction, perched higher in the embrace of the Black Forest. Malsch’s recorded history begins in the latter half of the 11th century, tied to a donation by Abbot Samuel of Weißenburg Abbey. The donation involved land in Malsch and two other locations. Over the centuries, Malsch changed hands several times. The Margraviate of Baden acquired it in the 12th century, only to sell it to Herrenalb Abbey in 1318. The abbey’s dissolution during the Reformation in 1535 led to Malsch becoming part of Württemberg. Württemberg then returned Malsch to Baden in 1603. Malsch faced numerous hardships throughout its history. Wars, famine, and plague took their toll, but one event stands out: the devastating “Croatian Fire” of 1623. This catastrophic event decimated most of the village, reducing its population from 1,400 to a mere 300. The 18th century brought further turmoil. In 1796, Malsch became the site of a battle during the First Coalition War. More recently, Malsch experienced significant growth and change during the 20th century. The incorporation of Sulzbach, Waldprechtsweier, and Völkresbach expanded its boundaries. Today, Malsch boasts several notable landmarks. The St. Peter Chapel in Malsch’s cemetery features a remarkable 12th-century tympanum. The Church of St. Cyriak, originally built in 1458 and later expanded, is a testament to centuries of faith and community. The Stadthalle Malsch holds a unique surprise. It houses a walk-in model of a “Planet Column Room,” based on designs by Rudolf Steiner. History buffs will appreciate the Stadtmühle Malsch. First mentioned in 1511, this mill served the community for centuries before its closure in 1980. Lovingly restored, it now functions as a museum. The fully functional milling equipment provides a glimpse into Malsch’s past. As you stand here in Malsch, absorb the rich tapestry of history and nature that surrounds you. From its early beginnings as a small settlement to its modern-day charm, Malsch offers a captivating journey through time.
