The bloodstained shirt a relic of a forgotten tragedy. This is the Église Saint-Joseph des Épinettes.

Here stands a testament to faith resilience and a curious historical detail. The Église Saint-Joseph des Épinettes wasn’t just built it was born from necessity. In 1907 the parish was separated from Saint-Michel des Batignolles. The Archdiocese of Paris recognized the burgeoning need for a new church in the Épinettes district.

Construction began in 1909. It concluded a year later. Architect Placide Thomas designed the neo-Romanesque structure. The Goüin and Roland-Gosselin families financed it. Their nearby factories contributed to the project’s success. The church stands as a proud symbol of Parisian Catholicism. It’s one of the first constructed after the 1905 law separating church and state.

Notice the brickwork the Latin cross plan. The vaults rise 17 meters high. An octagonal cupola crowns the transept. Light streams in through an oculus a beautiful architectural detail. But the most intriguing fact lies hidden. Within the very foundations of this seemingly ordinary building rests a chilling reminder of the past.

The bloodstained shirt of young Hippolyte Debroise. He was murdered by anarchists during a Corpus Christi procession in 1907. The shirt a poignant symbol of violence was placed in the church’s foundations. A silent witness to the turbulent times of its construction. Archbishop Amette consecrated the Église Saint-Joseph des Épinettes. This act symbolized hope amidst the chaos.

Inside a Cavaillé-Coll organ greets the ear. This instrument originally belonged to Countess Anna de Noailles. Her grandson Émile Aviné a student of Guilmant and Vierne won a prestigious organ prize. The instrument resided in his home in Gisors before finding a permanent home in our church. After a partial restoration its original character was unfortunately altered. Thankfully a full restoration was completed in 2007.

The Église Saint-Joseph des Épinettes is more than a place of worship. It’s a living testament to history. It’s a quiet guardian of a tragic past. A place of solace and reflection. A quiet reminder of a Parisian community’s faith. It’s worth taking a moment to appreciate this hidden gem. A hidden gem rich with history in the heart of Paris.
