A legacy of faith stands before you. This is Masjid Baitul Makmur. Its story begins not with grand pronouncements but with a quiet act of generosity.

Masjid Baitul Makmur in Cikini Central Jakarta boasts a history intertwined with the life of Raden Saleh a renowned 19th-century painter. Oral tradition whispers that he allowed Muslims to build a small prayer house on his estate around 1850. This humble beginning marked the seed of what would become Masjid Baitul Makmur.

The mosque’s early years weren’t without challenges. After Raden Saleh’s death his wife sold the estate. A legal battle ensued regarding the mosque’s land ownership. The simple structure was even temporarily relocated. The mosque’s location shifted to the banks of the Ciliwung River. This allowed worshippers to easily perform wudu a ritual cleansing before prayer.

The fight for its survival was fierce. A committee including prominent figures like Agus Salim Mas Mansur and Cokroaminoto formed. They championed the mosque’s cause. Between 1932 and 1934 Sarekat Islam funded renovations and expansion. This transformed the simple prayer house into a more substantial concrete structure.

Despite these efforts the mosque remained in a legal limbo for decades. The land dispute continued. It wasn’t until 1991 that Cikini Hospital finally bequeathed the land to Masjid Baitul Makmur. This secured the mosque’s place on its original site. The land was recognized as a waqf a religious endowment left to the community by Raden Saleh.

Today Masjid Baitul Makmur stands tall a testament to the enduring faith and perseverance of its community. It’s a symbol of Jakarta’s rich Islamic heritage. It’s a story of humble beginnings legal battles and unwavering dedication. It’s a place where history lives and breathes. A place where the spirit of Raden Saleh’s generosity continues to resonate.
