The Danish Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities history stretches back. In 1979, the Ministry of Energy emerged. It grew from the Ministry of Trade’s energy department. Fast forward to 1994. It merged with the Ministry of the Environment. By 2005, it detached again. It then merged with the Ministry of Transport and Energy.
A significant shift occurred on November 23, 2007. Energy issues de-merged from Transport. Climate concerns de-merged from Environment. This birthed the Ministry of Climate and Energy. Later it was named Klima-, Energi- og Bygningsministeriet.
Let’s talk ministers. Poul Nielson was the first Minister for Energy. He served from 1979 to 1982. Knud Enggaard followed. Svend Erik Hovmand and Jens Bilgrav-Nielsen also held the position. Anne Birgitte Lundholt took the reins next.
In 1993, Jann Sjursen became Minister for the Environment and Energy. Then Svend Auken took over. Flemming Hansen stepped in as Minister of Transport and Energy in 2001. Jakob Axel Nielsen briefly held the climate and energy post in 2007.
Connie Hedegaard became Minister for Climate and Energy in 2007. Lykke Friis succeeded her in 2009. Martin Lidegaard became Minister for Climate, Energy and Building in 2011. Rasmus Helveg Petersen then took the role. He was Minister for Energy, Utilities and Climate.
Lars Christian Lilleholt took over in 2015. He was Minister for Energy, Utilities and Climate. Dan Jørgensen became minister in 2019. Lars Aagaard assumed the role in 2022. He is the current Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities.
Several agencies operate under the ministry. These include the Danish Meteorological Institute. Forsyningstilsynet is a research board. Energinet also falls under its purview. Klimarådet advises on climate issues.
The ministry also oversees Styrelsen for Dataforsyning og Effektivisering. De Nationale Geologiske Undersøgelser operate for Denmark and Greenland. The Danish Energy Agency also reports to the ministry. Geodatastyrelsen completes the list.
