Lost in thought, a golden figure keeps watch over Munich. It is the Angel of Peace. This monument with its terrace is a popular vantage point. It stands in the Maximiliansanlagen.
Let me introduce you to the Friedensengel. Locals often call it the Angel of Peace. The monument commemorates 25 years of peace after the Franco-Prussian War. It was unveiled in 1899. The Angel of Peace is more than just a statue. It symbolizes hope. It also symbolizes resilience.
The golden statue is a replica of the Nike of Paionios. Nike is a synonym for military victory. Including the column, the monument reaches 38 meters high. From here, you can enjoy panoramic views. You can see the city at your feet. You can also admire the golden angel above.
Take a look at the Prinzregent-Luitpold-Terrasse. From here, you can overlook Prinzregentenstraße. Admire its magnificent buildings such as Haus der Kunst. See the Bavarian National Museum and the Prinz Carl Palais. The view is stunning year-round. In summer evenings, the fountain below is illuminated. This creates a romantic atmosphere.
The six-meter-high goddess of victory holds an olive branch. It is a symbol of peace. In her left hand, she holds the Palladion. This is an image of the goddess Athena. Athena represents battle and wisdom.
Below the statue, the temple depicts portraits. These are on its corner pillars. You’ll see emperors, chancellors, and generals. Emperor Wilhelm I and King Ludwig II are among them.
Inside the hall, four gold mosaics point in every direction. They depict war, victory, peace, and the blessing of culture. Two steps lead down to the fountain. It is framed by four putti riding dolphins.
The foundation stone for the Angel of Peace was laid on May 10, 1896. Heinrich Düll, Georg Pezold, and Max Heilmaier created the bronze statue. Ferdinand von Miller cast the bronze.
In 1981, the gilded figure was removed due to damage. The goddess of victory returned in 1983. Her wings rise steeper into the sky since then.
For its centenary in 1999, the monument was cleaned and repaired. The angel received a new gold leaf dress. The Angel of Peace stands as a reminder. It reminds us of the importance of peace. It also reminds us of Munich’s rich history.
