A chill wind whispers through the ancient trees. This is Nordre Kirkegård. More than just a resting place it’s a green haven steeped in Aarhus history.

Established in 1876 Nordre Kirkegård replaced Søndre Kirkegård. Søndre Kirkegård was located where Aarhus’ city hall stands today. This peaceful cemetery east of Aarhus University and Aarhus University Hospital offers a unique glimpse into Aarhus’ past. It’s a place of quiet reflection a green space for city dwellers.

Nordre Kirkegård wasn’t always so serene. Its early days involved a rather smelly problem. A nearby dung heap proved quite unpleasant. The city council had to order its removal before the cemetery opened. The inauguration in 1876 included the first two burials. A ticket collector and a barber’s wife were the first to rest here.

The cemetery’s Neo-Romanesque chapel was inaugurated in 1880. It was designed by architect Vilhelm Puck. However the chapel proved too small. So architect S F Kjøchnel remodelled it in 1909. A crematorium was added to the basement in 1941. That crematorium was later decommissioned in 1969.

Nordre Kirkegård has expanded several times. In 1891 1892 1899 and 1912 the cemetery grew to accommodate the city’s growing population. Eventually it filled up. So in 1920 the decision was made to create Vestre Kirkegård. Vestre Kirkegård opened seven years later.

Today Nordre Kirkegård is a beautiful and historic place. It’s a popular spot for picnics leisurely strolls and quiet contemplation. Notable figures such as Hans Broge Enrico Mylius Dalgas Peter Sabroe and Herman Salling are buried here. Their resting places are among the 450 preserved grave monuments. These monuments tell tales of Aarhus’ citizens through time.
