A cacophony of sounds, a whirlwind of activity. That’s Plaza de Santo Domingo in Mexico City. Here at Plaza de Santo Domingo, the past and present collide. The plaza sits northwest of the Zocalo, in the heart of the historic center. It’s a place where the echoes of scribes and revolutionaries mingle with the clatter of modern-day Mexico City. Plaza de Santo Domingo is more than just a plaza. It is a living testament to the city’s rich and complex history.

The Dominicans arrived in New Spain in 1526. They established a monastery and church right here, on land that may have once belonged to Cuauhtémoc, the last Aztec emperor. Imagine the scene. The Spanish conquistadors had recently toppled the Aztec empire. The Dominicans, tasked with converting the indigenous population, began construction of their imposing religious complex. The current church, the third on this site, was completed in 1736. Its pink stone facade and ornate carvings speak to the power and influence of the church in colonial Mexico.

Across the plaza stands the Portal de Evangelistas. Under its Tuscan colonnade, scribes once plied their trade, writing letters for those who couldn’t read or write. Originally equipped with quill pens and tule seats, these “evangelists,” as they were known, later adopted typewriters. Today, printers and vendors occupy the portal. They create everything from wedding invitations to, let’s just say, less-than-authentic official documents.

In the center of Plaza de Santo Domingo, a fountain features a statue of Doña Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez, “La Corregidora.” She played a crucial role in the Mexican War of Independence. A heroine who risked everything for freedom. This statue stands as a reminder of the plaza’s connection to pivotal moments in Mexican history. It was here, in this very plaza, that General Santiago Vidaurri was executed in 1867 for his collaboration with the French-backed Emperor Maximilian.

Just steps from the plaza is the former Palace of the Inquisition. The imposing building served as the headquarters of the Holy Inquisition in Mexico. It’s a chilling reminder of the darker side of colonial history. Today, it houses the Palacio de Medicina, a medical museum.

Plaza de Santo Domingo is a place of contrasts. It is where history whispers from ancient stones, and where the vibrant energy of modern Mexico City pulses. As you stroll through the plaza, soak it all in. The sights, the sounds, the stories. Plaza de Santo Domingo is a microcosm of Mexico City itself: a blend of old and new, sacred and profane, where the past continues to shape the present.
