“A place of abundant water,” whispered the wind as we approached the Church of Santa María Magdalena. Here in Magdalena Atlitic, nestled between the Sierra de las Cruces and Ajusco mountains, time seems to flow like the Eslava River. Santa María Magdalena stands as a testament to the blending of cultures. The Franciscans and Dominicans arrived in 1535, bringing with them their faith and the name of Mary Magdalene. To honor the indigenous people and their reverence for the plentiful water sources, they named the town Magdalena Atlitic. The original 16th-century chapel eventually gave way to the grand structure we see today, the Church of Santa María Magdalena. Completed in the 18th century, its Baroque facade, accented with Mudejar elements, hints at the rich history within. Inside, a neoclassical altar and an imposing painting of Mary Magdalene await. The church achieved national monument status in 1932, solidifying its place in Mexican history. But Santa María Magdalena is more than just a church. It’s a symbol of the community’s enduring spirit. Magdalena Atlitic has a long and fascinating connection to textiles. In 1543, Jerónimo de León harnessed the power of the rivers, using a water wheel to drive textile production. The Contreras family later continued this tradition, their name eventually becoming synonymous with the entire region, now known as La Magdalena Contreras. By the 19th century, water-powered mills hummed across the landscape, producing woolen goods and clothing. The spirit of innovation continued with the establishment of “dinamos,” power stations in the nearby mountains, providing energy for the factories. These very power stations gave their name to Los Dinamos National Park, a testament to the region’s industrial heritage now reclaimed by nature. So, as you stand before Santa María Magdalena, remember, you’re not just looking at a church. You are witnessing the convergence of history, faith, and industry, all woven together like the finest textiles of Magdalena Atlitic.
