Cheah Chen Eok, a prominent Chinese businessman, dreamt of a grand gesture. He envisioned a towering tribute to Queen Victoria in George Town, Penang. Today, we stand before the realization of that dream: the Queen Victoria Memorial Clock Tower. This magnificent structure, completed in 1902, commemorates Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. The Queen Victoria Memorial Clock Tower is a striking blend of Moorish and Victorian styles. It stands at the intersection of Light Street and Beach Street. The tower’s height is no accident. Sixty feet to the clock’s center, each foot representing a year of Victoria’s reign. Interestingly, the Queen never saw the finished tower. She passed away in 1901 before its completion. The clock itself was imported from Europe, featuring opal glass windows and a belfry that once housed five chiming bells. Look closely, and you might notice a slight tilt. This lean is a lasting reminder of the Second World War bombings that shook George Town. Despite the wartime damage, the clock and chimes were repaired, continuing to mark time for the city. Sadly, the chimes are silent today. The Queen Victoria Memorial Clock Tower isn’t just a timepiece. It’s a testament to Penang’s rich history, a symbol of the era’s craftsmanship, and a beautiful landmark in the heart of George Town.
