Drawn to the charm of a place with a name meaning “settlement on a fertile mountain”, we find ourselves in Reichenberg. This part of Moritzburg offers an ideal starting point for excursions to Dresden. Meissen and Radebeul are not far away.
Reichenberg’s story began in 1235. It was first mentioned as “Richenberc”. Thymo de Rychenberg was mentioned in 1289. It is assumed that there was a manor house in the village at that time. Over the centuries, the name evolved. “Richinberg” and “Reichenburg” preceded the current name.
In 1838, Reichenberg gained independence. This was based on the rural community order. At the beginning of the 20th century, Neu-Reichenberg settlement emerged. In 1956 it was incorporated into Boxdorf. In 1975, the Moritzburg municipal association was founded. Reichenberg joined this association. Boxdorf and Friedewald were incorporated into Reichenberg on January 1, 1994. Reichenberg was incorporated into Moritzburg exactly five years later in 1999.
Reichenberg has been the church village for the surrounding villages. This includes Boxdorf, Friedewald and Wahnsdorf. The village church is worth seeing. It has a historic baptismal font. A beautiful portal and a chancellery complete the picture.
The Reichenberg church dates back to around 1200. A simple Romanesque arch bears witness to this. It can be found on the south wall of the church. An old baptismal font also dates to that time. In the late Gothic period, the building was rebuilt. It essentially took on its present form. The nave was raised. A chancel was added. A small cemetery surrounds the church.
Reichenberg offers many opportunities for recreation. A sports field is available. The “Bad Sonnenland” holiday village and campsite has an active trail. The network of bridle paths, cycle paths and hiking trails is well developed. This allows for active exploration of the unique forest and lake landscape.
Today, Reichenberg has about 1,414 inhabitants. It lies at an altitude of 180 to 240 meters above sea level. Walter Erich Henn was born in Reichenberg in 1912. He was an architect, civil engineer and university professor. Reichenberg combines history with nature. A visit promises interesting discoveries and relaxing moments.
