“Who are we?” That’s a question West Church in Auckland answers with open arms. West Church is a diverse community of Kiwi believers. They gather together. They are united by the infinite love of God. They are centered around Jesus Christ and His Word.
West Church isn’t just a building. It’s a family. People from Zambia to India enrich its spirit. People from the Philippines to China add to its unique culture. Everyone is welcome here.
The church’s goal is simple. They want to build each other up. They proclaim the riches of God’s glory to all in West Auckland. You are invited to join them.
West Church has a rich history. West Harbour Alliance Church was planted in 1977. Rev. Royce and Betty Rexilius had a strong passion. They wanted to reach out into the community. They also had a commitment to prayer. First Alliance Church supported them. Now it is called Blockhouse Bay Community Church.
Before a building existed, the church met in homes. Linda and Melvin Alexander opened their home. Later, they moved to the Royal Road School staff room. Twenty-one people became foundation members in 1979.
Soon after, the church purchased land. It was on the crest of the hill. The location was at the corner of Moire and Luckens Roads. The young church aimed to be a light to the community. This decision was visionary. At the time, empty sections surrounded them. Livestock from a deer farm grazed nearby.
Over time, the four sections became one. Volunteers built a facility. The community responded to Pastor Rex’s passionate preaching. Pastor Rex and Betty served for over ten years. Then they returned to the USA.
Many pastors have served West Church faithfully. Neil Keating and Frank Marshall are among them. Barry Charlton and Matthew Mordaunt also served. Brian Thom and Gordon Miller contributed. Many lay people worked tirelessly. They ensured the church remained a light. They committed to the community and to prayer. They supported Alliance Global Missions.
Recently, the church changed its name. It is now West Harbour Church. This change helps it relate to the community better. It remains an active member of the Alliance Churches of New Zealand.
West Church offers more than just Sunday services. They meet on Sundays at 10:30 am. The service includes worship and prayer. Members serve one another. Friendships deepen. They are strengthened by God. They hear Him afresh in the Bible each week. Sunday School is available for children. They learn from the Bible. They deepen friendships. They take part in different activities. These activities help them learn and connect. The service ends around 11:45 am. Many people stay afterwards. They share food, tea, and coffee together.
