Gazing across the tranquil landscape, can you picture Iona in its early days? Iona, a small rural locality in Victoria, lies 73 kilometers southeast of Melbourne’s bustling center. Originally known as Bunyip South, and even less flatteringly as “The Swamp”, Iona’s story began with the draining of the Koo Wee Rup swamp. This created fertile farmland, attracting many settlers, particularly unemployed married men looking for a fresh start. Imagine the back-breaking work involved in transforming this marshy land into the productive area we see today. Iona quickly became one of Victoria’s most densely populated agricultural districts. In its early years, a wooden tramline connected Iona to Bunyip. The small township boasted a state school, established in 1894, along with a grocery store, bakery, and the Pioneer Hall, built in 1895. A creamery opened in 1897, quickly gaining fifty suppliers by 1900. The residents clearly felt a sense of community and purpose. The name “Iona” wasn’t adopted until 1905. It’s a nod to the Scottish island, a historical center of Irish Monasticism. This reflects the strong community spirit and perhaps the peaceful nature of the area. St Josephs Catholic Church, a significant landmark in Iona, opened its doors in 1900. The original structure was later replaced in 1940 by the current brick building. St Josephs Catholic School followed soon after, opening in 1915. These institutions further cemented Iona’s identity as a thriving community. Iona’s population peaked at 863 in 1911. While the numbers have fluctuated over the years, the town has retained its charm and close-knit community. Iona offers a glimpse into a past era of pioneering spirit and agricultural growth. The quiet landscape still holds the echoes of the hard work and dedication of those early settlers who transformed “The Swamp” into the peaceful community of Iona.
