Have you ever heard the chimes of a church bell echoing through the decades? Saint Stephen Catholic Church in Chicago has a story to tell. A story woven from the faith of generations.
This isn’t just any church. Saint Stephen’s is a testament to the vibrant history of Chicago’s Slovenian community. Founded in 1898 it served as a spiritual anchor for countless families. The beautiful church building itself was constructed in 1904. The sanctuary was later rebuilt in the 1960s a testament to the enduring spirit of faith.
The original Saint Stephen’s wasn’t just a place of worship. It was a hub. It was the heart of a community. A place where people came together not only for mass but for life’s milestones and celebrations. Its bells still ring today. Now electronically operated they continue to call people to prayer.
The Saint Stephen’s parish also had a school. Ground was broken in May 1922 for this school. This school was located at the corner of Wolcott and Cermak. But alas both the school and the parish closed in June 1996. This marked the end of an era. Yet it also paved the way for something new.
The Jesuits saw the opportunity for renewal. They were looking for a site to launch their mission. Their mission was to provide quality education to low-income Latino communities. Saint Stephen’s became home to Cristo Rey Jesuit High School.
The building was transformed. A large-scale renovation in 2010 modernized the building. This renovation included new wiring updated heating and cooling systems and a brand new sound system. The chapel which incorporated student feedback and the school’s cultural heritage was also redesigned. It now features new stained glass windows a retablo and inspiring religious paintings. It also offers a devotional space for Our Lady of Guadalupe.
Today the former Saint Stephen’s Church stands as a testament to change and renewal. It’s a place where history and faith intertwine.
