Behold the Farnex Hercules a magnificent marble bust. It stands proudly in Melbourne’s Queen Victoria Gardens. This isn’t just any statue. It’s a replica of a famous Roman sculpture. The original resides in the Vatican Museum.

Our Hercules is a powerful figure. His shoulders are broad his head turned to the right. He embodies strength and heroism. He’s a symbol of classical power. He represents the legendary hero of ancient Greece. Half god half human Hercules endured incredible hardships. He was born from an illicit union between Zeus and Alcmene. Hera Zeus’s wife made his life difficult. His story is one of immense strength courage and incredible deeds. Ultimately he was rewarded for his struggles. He ascended to Mount Olympus to live amongst the gods.

This particular Hercules arrived in Melbourne thanks to Theodore Fink. A prominent solicitor politician newspaper owner and educator Fink acquired the bust during a trip to Rome. He presented it as a gift to the people of Melbourne in 1928. The unveiling ceremony took place on October 2nd. Mayor Sir Stephen J Morell performed the honours. The statue is not alone. A replica of the Belvedere Apollo stands nearby. Fink’s donation marked the end of an era. It concluded a tradition of placing copies of classical sculptures in Melbourne’s public gardens. This tradition began in the 1860s. Most of these sculptures were removed by the 1930s. Fink hoped his gift would beautify the parks. He believed it would elevate public taste inspire appreciation for art and promote Australian artistry.
