Across the Thames, Boyle Farm Island sits serenely. Boyle Farm Island is a hidden gem. It’s the second largest of three islands near Thames Ditton. This island holds a unique distinction. It’s home to a single house and just one family. Boyle Farm Island sits directly across from the former Boyle Farm. This historic mansion is now the Home of Compassion. While its larger neighbor, Thames Ditton Island, is part of Middlesex, Boyle Farm Island belongs to Surrey. The tiny Swan Island is actually shared between the two counties. Interestingly, the islands near Boyle Farm were once part of the estate. During grand parties at Boyle Farm, fireworks would illuminate the sky above these islands. Imagine the spectacle. Boyle Farm itself has a rich history. The land was transferred to Robert Hatton in 1611. A mansion named “Fords” soon graced the property. The Hattons held onto the estate for 150 years. In 1783, Mrs. Boyle Walsingham acquired the estate and renamed it Boyle Farm. The purchase encompassed not only the main house, but also the islands and other parcels of land in Thames Ditton. Boyle Farm Island remains a peaceful haven. It’s a testament to a time when life moved at a slower pace, a secluded sanctuary amidst the bustle of London.
