Beneath the Saxon sun, the Wasserwerk Köhra stands as a quiet guardian. It ensures a steady flow of life to the nearby communities of Belgershain and Köhra. The Wasserwerk Köhra isn’t just a utilitarian structure. It represents a vital link to the region’s growth and prosperity. The Leipzig Waterworks oversees this small, self-sufficient plant. They also manage four larger groundwater works in Naunhof, Canitz, and Thallwitz. These facilities work together to quench the thirst of Leipzig and its surrounding areas.

The Wasserwerk Köhra plays a crucial role in the local water supply. Currently, it meets the daily needs of Belgershain and Köhra. A large storage tank diligently collects water throughout the night. This stored water then serves the community during the day. However, the growing populations of Belgershain and Köhra present a challenge. The Leipzig Waterworks recognizes that during peak times, the Wasserwerk Köhra sometimes struggles to keep up. These peak times can be early morning, evening, or during hot, dry spells when gardens need watering. This can lead to pressure fluctuations in the water supply. Further population growth might exacerbate this issue. Another concern is the Wasserwerk Köhra’s isolated operation. In the event of an emergency, like a major fire requiring large amounts of water, there’s currently no way to supply additional water from external sources.

Built in 1969, the Wasserwerk Köhra eventually came under the management of the Leipzig Waterworks in 1996. Every year, it pumps out up to 127,750 cubic meters of drinking water. This vital resource is distributed through almost 17 kilometers of pipelines, reaching homes and businesses in Belgershain and Köhra. Looking towards the future, the Leipzig Waterworks is developing a plan to restructure the water supply system for these communities. The first phase involves connecting Köhra to the existing pressure booster station in Fuchshain. This station already receives water from Naunhof. This connection is scheduled to begin in 2028. It will involve constructing a new pipeline between Fuchshain and the existing network. Belgershain will continue to rely on the Wasserwerk Köhra. However, diverting Köhra’s supply to the Fuchshain station will significantly reduce the strain on the smaller waterworks.

The pressure booster station in Fuchshain has already been upgraded. This ensures a steady water supply, even during peak demand, preventing pressure loss. The upgrade also improves the system’s resilience to emergencies and allows for future population growth. The Wasserwerk Köhra might be small. But it embodies the dedication and foresight of the Leipzig Waterworks. They are committed to providing a reliable water supply for the growing communities they serve.
