From this vantage point you can see almost all of San Francisco. The Golden Gate Bridge glitters in the distance. Downtown sprawls below. Even on foggy days the sun kisses these slopes. Red-tailed hawks circle overhead.
Bernal Heights Park has a rich history. It’s named after José Cornelio de Bernal a soldier in Juan Bautista de Anza’s 1776 expedition. The area became a squatter’s paradise. The Van Ness Ordinance of 1855 gave those squatters legal land ownership.
As San Francisco grew Bernal Heights blossomed. Homes were built. A close-knit community thrived. They used the hill for cattle and dairy farming.
In 1876 a Frenchman sparked a mini gold rush. He claimed to find gold worth a million dollars per ton. It turned out to be quartz. Much less valuable.
The 1906 earthquake proved Bernal Heights’ resilience. The hill’s sturdy rock protected many homes. Unlike areas built on landfill or sand dunes few were destroyed.
Bernal Heights Park offers a one-mile trail. Walkers joggers and runners enjoy the magnificent views. It’s popular with dog owners too.
Explore the rock labyrinth. It’s smaller than the one at Lands End. It’s still worth a visit for a relaxing stroll or a photo opportunity.
The playground offers fun for children. Sand rubber mat and blacktop surfaces are available. Colorful play structures abound. A nearby basketball court is always buzzing with activity.
The Bernal Heights Recreation Center provides year-round activities. It offers afterschool programs and gym access. Winter break camps and other events are also organized.
Bernal Heights Park is more than just a park. It’s a natural habitat. It’s a community gathering place. It’s a piece of San Francisco’s history. Enjoy your time here. It’s a place to escape the urban frenzy. It’s a place to relax and appreciate the beauty of San Francisco.
