Can you imagine a city gasping for air? At the dawn of the 20th century, Mexico City was choking. Deforestation had stripped the surrounding land bare. Floods ravaged the city. Dust storms choked its inhabitants. Enter Miguel Ángel de Quevedo, the “Apostle of the Tree”. He envisioned a green shield around the city, a ring of trees to protect it from the ravages of nature. His vision took root here, at Vivero Coyoacán. Vivero Coyoacán is more than just a park. It’s a living testament to one man’s unwavering dedication. Originally part of the sprawling Panzacola ranch, this 39-hectare sanctuary began with a single hectare donated by Quevedo himself in 1901. He transformed the arid land into a thriving nursery, the first large-scale tree nursery in Latin America. Vivero Coyoacán became the heart of a network of nurseries, pumping life back into the city’s ravaged landscape. Between 1913 and 1914 alone, an astounding 140,000 trees were planted. Today, Vivero Coyoacán continues its mission, nurturing over one million seedlings each year. These seedlings are destined for parks, streets, and green spaces throughout Mexico City. Walk these paths, and you’re walking through a piece of history. Imagine Quevedo, overseeing the planting of the first eucalyptus trees, the beginnings of Mexico’s first forest nursery. Now, listen to the rustle of leaves overhead. These are the descendants of those early pioneers. They provide a haven for countless birds and, yes, those famously tame squirrels. Feeding them is a beloved pastime, although their overpopulation poses a challenge to the park’s delicate balance. Vivero Coyoacán is not just a place of tranquility.
