In 1970, residents of Chicago’s far south side called for new high schools. They wanted to address the overcrowding at Harlan and Fenger High Schools. This demand led to the construction of two new institutions. One of them was Corliss High School, established in 1971 and opened in September 1974. Corliss High School, named after the renowned American mechanical engineer and inventor George Henry Corliss, was more than just a building. It was a symbol of progress and opportunity for the community.

The school quickly grew, embracing its role in providing quality education. By 1976, Corliss High School had its first graduating class, marking a significant milestone in its history. Today, Corliss High School stands as a testament to the community’s commitment to education. It later became George Henry Corliss High School to honor the inventor. The school’s design is unique. Different facilities within Corliss High School are named after prominent African-Americans, paying homage to their heritage and contributions. The auditorium, Ellington Hall, takes its name from the legendary composer-pianist Duke Ellington. The Jackie Robinson Physical Education Building honors the baseball icon. The Arna Bontemps Library Media Center recognizes the celebrated Harlem Renaissance poet.

Corliss High School isn’t just about academics. It’s also a place where students can explore their passions and talents. In 2012, Corliss High School embraced the future by joining the Chicago Public Schools’ STEM program. This move underscored the school’s commitment to equipping its students with the skills needed to thrive in the 21st century. Today, as you stand before Corliss High School, take a moment to appreciate its journey and its impact on generations of students. It’s a reminder that education is a powerful tool for change and a beacon of hope for the future.
